Meeting Description
This is RSVP - America Reads annual meeting for training volunteer tutors who help Kindergarten - third graders in Comal ISD elementary schools. Our program works with the school's staff to pair senior volunteers (55 years of age and older) with the students. The tutors pass a school-administered back-ground check. The students are tested at beginning of school year to determine their grade/ reading level. Our program helps those students not reading on their grade level. They meet individually and weekly for 30 minutes on the school campus throughout the school year.
The students are tested again at the end of school year to determine their progress. This past school year 76% of the students were reading at or above their grade level. The program not only helps improve reading skills but also provides encouragement and individual attention for the students, and also improves the students' self-confidence.
